2019 Hot 100 – Top 5 Winners Interviews, Screenwriter Hayley Jean Reeves

As the top writers on this year’s Hot 100 List we want to do as much as we can to continue the exposure and word of mouth in the investment circles of the industry. Another way we do this is with writer interviews that we send far and wide and showcase at all possible meetings and markets.

We want to encourage your writing spirit, motivate you and again give you the accolades you so deserve.

LEGACY

Written by Hayley Jean Reeves

What motivated you to write this project?

The project is centered on my real life relationship with my much loved grandmother who passed away two years ago. My motivation for working on this project was my desire to use my creativity and writing to pay tribute to her.

Legacy has a detailed world that you created- where does your creativity come from?

I’ve never really questioned where my creativity comes from. When I have an idea for a project, I just let my creativity flow.

Do you write projects knowing that so many other factors need to happen to get it to screen and does that come into your project creation?

Even though I have a background in writing, mostly journalistic, this is my first screenplay. When I was working on it, I just allowed myself to enjoy the process and didn’t focus on the factors that need to happen to get the project produced.

What is your dream for this project and what other ancillary revenue do you think it could generate?

My dream for this project is that it will be produced. As music is a core element, there is potential for a soundtrack to create ancillary revenue. With the exception of one hymn arrangement (not the accompanying lyrics), please be advised that all the music and lyrics are unrestricted by copyright ie either the pieces have been composed more than 70 years ago or they are originals, composed by me and therefore I hold the rights to the material.

How has your experience been with screenwriting contests for this project so far?

I only completed the first draft of the screenplay in June this year and was still refining it when I entered it into the Capital Fund Screenplay Competition 2019 and was subsequently ranked third. I have only entered it into one other contest since but the results are yet to be announced.

If you could stand in a room full of investor partners looking at many projects what would you like them to know about you and this project?

This project delves into key topics that many people can relate to including the love and connection between a grandparent and a grandchild, welfare and social issues, the devastating illness, dementia, and the notion that there is a time and place for everything – “for such a time as this”.

There is also a focus on an issue that may be unfamiliar to many Western people today but is one that is still prevalent – the impact of war and conflict on the grassroots of society.

These aspects make this screenplay a compelling drama and, as it is based on a true story, it is all the more poignant.
