What motivated you to become a writer?
It was the last week of 2013, and I had the idea for my first novel, The Chemist, mapped out in my mind. It was to be a cautionary tale about a scientist with a guilty conscience after having created a new weapon of mass destruction to be unleashed upon the world. My goal had always been for it to become a film, but I needed to learn about how to construct a strong underlying story before taking the leap into drafting a screenplay. Two-and-a-half years later, this Game of Thrones-y epic of a story with multiple POVs was published. A year later, I attempted my first vomit draft of the screenplay that topped off at 204 pages. Ultimately, I was able to reign in the storylines enough to submit to several contests with encouraging results. Still, it was too big of a story to be producible at this stage of my screenwriting career, so by the end of 2019, I finished a page one rewrite to create Rigged, the self-contained thriller that it is today. My perseverance through the creative process has encouraged me to write three more screenplays.
Starting on a blank page is not easy- where does your creativity come from?
My music composition background taught me how to structure musical works by mapping out the highs and lows of musical exposition. Certainly current events and zeitgeists prevalent in our contemporary world catch my attention. I always like to place ordinary and unlikely protagonists in bigger-than-life situations and see where it takes me.
Do you write projects knowing that so many other factors need to happen to get it to screen and does that come into your project creation?
Although I always look for that “marketable” story idea mainstream audiences would find thought provoking, I feel drawn to tell stories that have interesting characters and an intriguing plot, regardless of what the market is looking for at any one particular time.
What is your dream for this project and what other ancillary revenue do you think it could generate? Please include script title in reply.
I look forward to partnering with a production company that is as passionate as I am about the project that is suitable for a worldwide audience. From there, I hope to convince a talented director and lead actors that this project is for them.
How has your experience been with screenwriting contests for this project so far?
This current iteration of Rigged awaits results from several contests. Thus far, Rigged was selected as a semifinalist in the StoryPros International Screenplay Contest.
If you could stand in a room full of investor partners looking at many projects what would you like them to know about you and this project?
I have always believed that Rigged is a story that needs to be told. Redemption is a significant theme, and many of us at one time or another in our lives seek it. I have devoted much time and effort to making Rigged as authentic as can be. I interviewed chemists, a special-ops sniper and a U.S. Army veteran of the war in Iraq.
