Writers Interviews, Alicia Obafemi

WRITER PROFILE

It’s always great to get together with a large group of writers and investors and keep up to date on what’s new, the screenplay contest, any recent deals, new dealmaker contacts, agents or managers that are looking and simply encouraging everyone to keep going after every dream in this difficult industry. For the hard working writer we want to do as much as we can to continue the exposure and word of mouth in the investment circles of the industry. Another way we do this is with writer interviews that we send far and wide and showcase at all possible meetings and markets.

We want to encourage your writing spirit, motivate you and again give you the accolades you so deserve.

She’s An Aries

What motivated you to become a writer?

I personally think I have a creative mind-set. From a young age, whenever an idea came to me I would write it down and “keep it for later”. One evening, I attended a local film premiere of someone I know, and at the end they shared their story of the difficulties they had creating their movie and the hindrances they had to overcome, but they also stated that there was a voice inside of them telling them to keep going. It was at that moment my inside voice reminded me of my own film idea(s) and how it was now or never to start putting them into action.

Starting on a blank page is not easy- where does your creativity come from?

Everything I see, read, and listen to can inspire me, and I use such inspiration to build on what is already tinkering in my mind.

Do you write projects knowing that so many other factors need to happen to get it to screen and does that come into your project creation?

I understand a lot goes into getting what is written on paper onto the screen. I understand that at the end of the day, film-making is a business. I will always be open to discussions about the best possible route for my project from both the creative and business point of view.

What is your dream for this project and what ancillary revenue do you think it could generate? Please include script title in reply.

My dream would be for someone to pick up “She’s an Aries” and immediately become engaged with the story and characters. I would want everyone to see it on the screen and watch onto the very end.

How has your experience been with screenwriting contests for this project so far?

The Capital Fund Screenplay Competition was the first contest I submitted the project for and it was placed onto the Hot 100 List 2020. Although I know there is still a ways to go, it still feels like I keep taking steps closer to fulfilling my vision.

If you could stand in a room full of investor partners looking at many projects what would you like them to know about you and this project?

This movie explores the desperate lengths a parent will go for their children. It is not your typical “happily ever after” story – it is more grounded in realism, showing that we can go to all lengths to try and get what we want, and still fail.

I strongly believe that there is a huge potential for this project; not only because it has a great storyline (although I may sound biased), but because there could potentially be spin-offs. I know this because I already have ideas for them.
