Writers Interviews, Screenwriter Catherine Fridey

WRITER PROFILE

It’s always great to get together with a large group of writers and investors and keep up to date on what’s new, the screenplay contest, any recent deals, new dealmaker contacts, agents or managers that are looking and simply encouraging everyone to keep going after every dream in this difficult industry. For the hard working writer we want to do as much as we can to continue the exposure and word of mouth in the investment circles of the industry. Another way we do this is with writer interviews that we send far and wide and showcase at all possible meetings and markets.

We want to encourage your writing spirit, motivate you and again give you the accolades you so deserve.

THE PATH TO VIRTUE

What motivated you to become a writer?

I studied fine and graphic arts, and have always loved to read and watch movies and television. The visual component of screenwriting is a great match for my background and training.

Starting on a blank page is not easy- where does your creativity come from?

Most of the time, I am inspired by something I have read, or by my personal experience or someone I know who has experienced it. Other stories come entirely from of my imagination. There is a touch of fantasy to most of my stories, even when they are anchored in real life.

Do you write projects knowing that so many other factors need to happen to get it to screen and does that come into your project creation?

I usually take into consideration the budget and marketability and how feasible it would be to get a project produced, but there are others that are definitely big budget dream projects which would require VFX or period costumes, etc.

What is your dream for this project and what other ancillary revenue do you think it could generate? Please include script title in reply.

THE PATH TO VIRTUE would appeal to a domestic as well as an international audience, and my dream would be to have an international cast and crew. I have produced several shorts, two of which I directed, so I would also love to be involved on the production side in some capacity. It could generate ancillary revenue in the form of streaming, DVD sales, downloads, in flight screenings,  musical score sales, novelization of the story (which I have already considered doing),

How has your experience been with screenwriting contests for this project so far?

THE PATH TO VIRTUE has done very well, and gotten excellent coverage from a literary manager. It has been a finalist/official selection in the LA Femme Film Festival, the All Genre Screenplay Contest, the Toronto Female Eye Film Festival, and was included in the Capital Fund Hot 100 List.

If you could stand in a room full of investor partners looking at many projects what would you like them to know about you and this project?

THE PATH TO VIRTUE is one of my passion projects, where OUTLANDER meets CLOUD ATLAS. I was born in France, but raised in Chicago, and now live in multicultural New Mexico. Being bilingual and bicultural, I have always been interested in stories where two cultures meet and the dynamics that ensue. In this instance, my protagonist, Maddy Baker, starts out American, but relives a past life during the French Revolution. She must fulfill her destiny as well as find true love, things people all over the world can relate to.
