Writers Interviews, Screenwriter Erick Huff

WRITER PROFILE

It’s always great to get together with a large group of writers and investors and keep up to date on what’s new, the screenplay contest, any recent deals, new dealmaker contacts, agents or managers that are looking and simply encouraging everyone to keep going after every dream in this difficult industry. For the hard working writer we want to do as much as we can to continue the exposure and word of mouth in the investment circles of the industry. Another way we do this is with writer interviews that we send far and wide and showcase at all possible meetings and markets.

We want to encourage your writing spirit, motivate you and again give you the accolades you so deserve.

A Different Kind of Enemy

What motivated you to become a writer?

I spent several years working as an international model and actor based in Hollywood. However, finding theatrical representation was a never-ending challenge. Frequently, I was given the same answers: “I already represent too many guys that look like you” or worse, “How about we discuss it over dinner?” Since I was never given the opportunity to audition for any substantial film roles, I decided to create my own by adapting short stories I had written into screenplays, which included protagonists that I wanted to play. Once other actors started reading my work, I was asked to write monologues for them and eventually short films, which ultimately led me to producing and directing my own films.

Starting on a blank page is not easy- where does your creativity come from?

Creativity comes from many unexpected sources; the world is a very colorful place. Most of the time, my stories are based on real-world situations connected with my own life experiences. However, my current screenplay came about in a different way. Choosing a completely different genre other than my usual psychological thrillers, I wanted to write a war film. But which war? The subject has been written about countless times and my goal was to approach the subject in a new way. Around this time, the mass shooting in the Pulse nightclub happened in Orlando, Florida. Pained by the news of another senseless act of terrorism, I asked myself, “Why would young Americans want to join ISIS?” It was at that moment that I knew exactly what my screenplay was going to examine.

Do you write projects knowing that so many other factors need to happen to get it to screen and does that come into your project creation?

My first passion in life has always been to be a film director. Knowing the road was going to be both challenging and competitive, I’ve continued to expand my knowledge with all facets of the production process. I have attended film school and spent time both in front of and behind the camera; not only to grow or increase my experiences, but to evolve within a very sophisticated and constantly changing film industry. My experiences have made it clear to me that having a well-written and well-formulated script is one of the most essential components of any successful film. I’m also aware of the other aspects of the filmmaking process, including development, production, post-production, marketing, and distribution, and these are all taken into consideration during all stages of the creative writing process.

What is your dream for this project and what other ancillary revenue do you think it could generate? Please include script title in reply.

My dream for this project is to raise the required funds to produce my screenplay, A Different Kind of Enemy, into a motion picture and to be the director on the project. I am also realistic and understand that the likelihood of a reputable production company providing funding for a multi-million dollar film with an unknown director at the helm may not be likely. However, I believe fresh and original material can be successfully directed by new and innovative filmmakers like myself. One very important area in which my film can generate ancillary revenue are the creative and unique elements attached to the project that will sell in foreign territories. The storyline crosses religious, political, and cultural boundaries and utilizes the culture and environment as a backdrop which will generate interest in the film.

How has your experience been with screenwriting contests for this project so far?

The Capital Fund Screenplay Competition is the second screenwriting contest I have submitted to. Prior to this contest, I submitted to one other competition and I’m waiting for a response sometime in June.

If you could stand in a room full of investor partners looking at many projects what would you like them to know about you and this project?

Before I wrote A Different Kind of Enemy, I was unfamiliar with the complexities of the Islamic world and had little understanding of what it meant to be a Muslim. The extent of my knowledge of the Islamic faith was limited to hearing about the atrocious acts of terrorism reported in the news media. Through extensive research during the development of this script, my eyes were opened to the ignorance and apprehension many people around the world feel towards those of the Islamic faith.

A Different Kind of Enemy contains unique elements of espionage, drama, action, and suspense. It also sends a powerful message highlighting the universal truth that all humans possess regardless of ethnicity, culture, or creed. That is the unbreakable bond of love parents have with their children and the lengths they are willing to go in order to protect them.
