Writers Interviews, Screenwriter Heidi Stangeland

WRITER PROFILE

It’s always great to get together with a large group of writers and investors and keep up to date on what’s new, the screenplay contest, any recent deals, new dealmaker contacts, agents or managers that are looking and simply encouraging everyone to keep going after every dream in this difficult industry. For the hard working writer we want to do as much as we can to continue the exposure and word of mouth in the investment circles of the industry. Another way we do this is with writer interviews that we send far and wide and showcase at all possible meetings and markets.

We want to encourage your writing spirit, motivate you and again give you the accolades you so deserve.

The Lost Son

What motivated you to become a writer?

I have always been a story teller, and have explored different forms of storytelling. My passion is with screenwriting and photography. I have always been writing, loved diving into unknown and strange worlds that I would create. Some years back as I was writing a children’s book, a friend of mine was attending UCLA screenwriting extension course – and of course we decided to swap for feedback. As soon as I read the screenplay – that format of storytelling – I knew THIS was what I was supposed to do. I had goosebumps as I realized this, and I immediately dove into classes and learning how to become a screenwriter.

Starting on a blank page is not easy- where does your creativity come from?

Everything around me. People, situations, I’ll read an article – see a story – and I’ll create my own version, usually by combining multiple things I’ve seen. I like to let the idea brew, see what other angles I can add to it.

Do you write projects knowing that so many other factors need to happen to get it to screen and does that come into your project creation?

Yes, I do try to be mindful of the production side of it.  I want the best story made and want to also make it possible to be made.

What is your dream for this project and what other ancillary revenue do you think it could generate? Please include script title in reply.

My dream for “The Lost Son”  of course to see this on screen, on a streaming service. It is a passion project of mine, and I am getting good response back from others so I know it resonate with people. I attached the Producer (and Director’s) pitch to this. He took my vision and enhanced it.

How has your experience been with screenwriting contests for this project so far?

This particular script I have not entered in any contest. It is optioned, and we are almost there with full financing – just need the homestretch. The producer also sent the script to the actor he visioned for this role – and who I greatly admire. They like the script and has shown interest in it.

If you could stand in a room full of investor partners looking at many projects what would you like them to know about you and this project?

This is a story about belonging, and finding that in an unconventional way. For me personally, the unknown has always been of great interest – I marvel at what else is out there. Not only in this world, but beyond.  And combining that with elements that makes it personal, it hits home and it makes it more real for the audience.
