Writers Interviews, J. Franklin Evans

WRITER PROFILE

It’s always great to get together with a large group of writers and investors and keep up to date on what’s new, the screenplay contest, any recent deals, new dealmaker contacts, agents or managers that are looking and simply encouraging everyone to keep going after every dream in this difficult industry. For the hard working writer we want to do as much as we can to continue the exposure and word of mouth in the investment circles of the industry. Another way we do this is with writer interviews that we send far and wide and showcase at all possible meetings and markets.

We want to encourage your writing spirit, motivate you and again give you the accolades you so deserve.

Cold Iron

Written by J. Franklin Evans

What motivated you to become a writer?

I can’t not write. I’ve tried. I can go a few months, maybe, and then the urge builds until I can’t fight it anymore. So now I don’t even try.

Starting on a blank page is not easy- where does your creativity come from?

I listen to music, sort of daydreaming, or I’ll watch a TV show or movie, not really paying too much attention to it, and something will grab me. A line, a situation, something. My subconscious will start chewing on it and, after a while, it’ll share the beginnings of an idea with the rest of me. That’s how many of my ideas come to me, though I’ve had some story-inspiring dreams, too.

Do you write projects knowing that so many other factors need to happen to get it to screen and does that come into your project creation?

Oh, yes, Cost considerations, like for FX, may enter into it when I’m developing an idea—for example, I may decide something. would be better as a low-budget, limited cast and settings project, and keep that in mind while I’m writing. Sometimes I can’t stick to the limits I’ve imposed on the project, but usually I can make it work. That’s what rewrites are for!

What is your dream for this project and what other ancillary revenue do you think it could generate? Please include script title in reply.

I’d love to see Cold Iron available as a finished film on one of the streaming platforms. That would be a dream come true for me. I think a graphic novel adaptation of the script would do well, and the setting plus the story practically beg for a soundtrack album of the score.

How has your experience been with screenwriting contests for this project so far?

I just started entering Cold Iron into contests a few months ago, but so far it’s been the most successful screenplay I’ve written. It’s advanced in the majority of contests where it has been entered up to now.

If you could stand in a room full of investor partners looking at many projects what would you like them to know about you and this project?

This project features a relatable POC, LGBTQ female protagonist, facing a terrifying monster from another world, in a city that itself embodies other-worldly magic, a city people all over the world find intriguing. It’s set in a past that many of the audience remember very well, or are at least familiar with, addressing issues that we as a society were wrestling with then, and are still wrestling with now. It’s a bittersweet, scary, sentimental story of love, friendship, and sacrifice.
