What motivated you to become a writer?
I felt inspired by movies I liked and those I thought could be better. I decided to try to write stories I would like to see.
Starting on a blank page is not easy- where does your creativity come from?
It seems when my mind is at rest or doing repetitive things, ideas will arrive: driving, lying down to sleep, waiting for something, showering.
Do you write projects knowing that so many other factors need to happen to get it to screen and does that come into your project creation?
Yes, I am aware of the challenges. I do tend to avoid hugely expensive ideas but aside from that I write where the concept takes me.
What is your dream for this project and what other ancillary revenue do you think it could generate?
Of course, I would very much like to see my series, Lodown and Highstreet filmed and distributed. It’s a dramedy of the life of an African American Sherlock Holmes type character. The protagonist faces difficulties that people of color face. I have chosen to place his difficulties inside a construct that has light comedy and funny characters. It is a gentle approach but nevertheless invites the audience to understand the protagonist’s problems.
I am a white person but the problems are variants of stories shared with me by friends and acquaintances. I have written the pilot and would like to find an African American writer to co-write the series with me.
I think it could be a web series and possibly an audio story as the dialogue reflects the characters very well.
How has your experience been with screenwriting contests for this project so far?
I have only sent this out to one contest. I am sharing it with writers of color to get feedback.
If you could stand in a room full of investor partners looking at many projects what would you like them to know about you and this project?
There has been an appetite for Sherlock Holmes stories for generations. Sherlock Holmes stories are family friendly, tent-pole type stories. Lodown and Highstreet is Sherlock Holmes in a different skin and in a different time. Like Sherlock, Sam Lodown is ingenious and caustic. He is great at solving mysteries but has lousy people skills. In many ways Lodown and Highstreet is a buddy comedy too. Over time Sam develops bonds with his ‘found’ but none too bright assistants, Jeremy Highstreet and Magda Gillette, who come from elite backgrounds.
Psych x Sherlock Holmes x Moonlighting
This show will appeal to an audience who enjoy mysteries and the company off these characters.
