Writers Interviews, Richard Bradley

WRITER PROFILE

It’s always great to get together with a large group of writers and investors and keep up to date on what’s new, the screenplay contest, any recent deals, new dealmaker contacts, agents or managers that are looking and simply encouraging everyone to keep going after every dream in this difficult industry. For the hard working writer we want to do as much as we can to continue the exposure and word of mouth in the investment circles of the industry. Another way we do this is with writer interviews that we send far and wide and showcase at all possible meetings and markets.

We want to encourage your writing spirit, motivate you and again give you the accolades you so deserve.

Shadows in Time

Written by Richard Bradley

What motivated you to become a writer?

I was trained in a commercial film studio in Sydney that had good US connections and they were used by Hollywood studios as their Australian production base. I had the enormous pleasure in seeing many top directors such as Don Chaffey and cameramen Jack Cardiff and great designers such as Maurice Binder of 007 franchise. All of them emphasized to me the importance of the screenplay above all else. Since then, I have been fortunate to have made 100 different films, which included drama. Many of these and others I wrote including the documentary franchises I created which took 12 years to produce. Writing has always been with me.

Starting on a blank page is not easy- where does your creativity come from?

My creativity comes from the many stories I used to write when I was a boy and play acting the stories in the backyard. When we got our first television, I just loved watching some old great series such as The Twilight Zone, Sea Hunt and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. I just loved the old RKO movies as well (what a great studio they were in the 30s and 40s). And of course, some great Australian films and series! I always felt the stories would come to me and eventually they did. And not only that! With my current series of 25 scripts under Travelers Tales. As I was completing the first draft of one script the next story idea came to me automatically. So now the hard slog of turning those scripts into final draft formats. But I love every minute of the creative process and have no regrets.

Do you write projects knowing that so many other factors need to happen to get it to screen and does that come into your project creation?

This is a tough industry. Always has been. There are thousands of scripts out there all competing. I remember I was producing a couple of films for financing some years ago. Had great scripts and some terrific Hollywood actors signed but they did not get into production. All that hard work, it was heartbreaking. But those are the breaks!  When I go into writing the scripts, I put the negative out of my mind. Enjoy the writing, the story, and characters that I have created. I love to have a go and believe in my work and enjoy the journey. You never know what the ending will be like.

What is your dream for this project and what other ancillary revenue do you think it could generate?

I just hope they get financed and made with the chance that others in the series will get made as well to provide some long-term revenue. I have a financier in Australia that also likes what I’m doing and is representing my work for sophisticated investors with tax driven incentives.

How has your experience been with screenwriting contests for this project so far?

My experience with writing contests has not been terrific. But I will continue to try when I see the opportunity.

If you could stand in a room full of investor partners looking at many projects what would you like them to know about you and this project?

The scripts have a common theme, but they are unique in storytelling and have a very wide audience. And can be packaged to provide investment value. That is important.

Do you have any website links for your writing, credits, background, etc that you would like to share?
