WRITER PROFILE
It’s always great to get together with a large group of writers and keep up to date on what’s new, any recent deals, new dealmaker contacts, agents or managers that are looking and simply encouraging everyone to keep going after every dream in this difficult industry. As a Third Thursday writer’s meeting winner we want to do as much as we can to continue the exposure and word of mouth in the investment circles of the industry. Another way we do this is with writer interviews that we send far and wide and showcase at all possible meetings and markets.
We want to encourage your writing spirit, motivate you and again give you the accolades you so deserve.
FUTURE KING
Written by Dawn Prato
What motivated you to become a writer?
I grew up on fairy tales – they were the first things I read on my own as a kid, and my parents fostered that love of storytelling from the very beginning. When I realized I could tell my own stories, make up places and characters like the ones I loved and identified with, well… the choice was made before I realized I made it, I think. There have been so many times in my life where a character has helped me work through things or learn to deal with whatever was going on at the time – writing has always been a way for me to try, at the very least, to share my experiences.
Starting on a blank page is not easy- where does your creativity come from?
I love fantasy, always have, and a lot of the time I look to older fables and myths to get me started. It’s not always a “once upon a time” kind of story that winds up getting told, but I find knowing the bones of a character or elements of a world always helps me shape the story.
Do you write projects knowing that so many other factors need to happen to get it to screen and does that come into your project creation?
It’s a complicated business with a lot of moving parts – I do try to keep tabs on what would be required for my projects, but sometimes, especially during first drafts, I set that aside so that I can get the story out.
What is your dream for this project and what other ancillary revenue do you think it could generate?
I would love to see Future King on screen, of course, whether it’s on a channel like the CW or a streaming service. The project originally started as a prose piece for a novel writing challenge, and I would love the opportunity to explore secondary characters and their stories in something like a web series, or different media – graphic novels, short stories, things like that.
How has your experience been with screenwriting contests for this project so far?
This is a new project for me, so I’m breaking ground (so to speak) – this is the first contest I’ve entered this particular project in to.
If you could stand in a room full of investor partners looking at many projects what would you like them to know about you and this project?
I love the fantasy genre, and I love my characters, though I suppose that last one’s a given! Bringing the stories of King Arthur into the modern day and moving past his days of Camelot has always intrigued me, and adding original characters into the mix, as well as a healthy dash of boardroom drama, is something I know has staying power with an audience. I know the story I want to tell, and as a writer who learned to write scripts in a group setting, working with a team of people means that there is that much more opportunity for unique perspectives and ideas and characters. There’s a kind of magic that can be found in working with others, and I look forward to finding it with this project.
