What motivated you to become a writer?
Doing my undergrad studies at the University of Baltimore, I fell in love with producing however in my writers lab I told my professor, “I’m not a writer, I’ll hire writers.” His comment to me that I never forgot was, “if you can write, you can write your ticket into anything.” I wrote my first screenplay, “I Want A Man.” After graduating, relocating to L.A. attending New York Film Academy my thesis project was to write a five minute script to produce for my final. Ten years after graduating I used “I Want A Man,” as my story to tell. In 2011 my short film, “I Want A Man.” WON an Indie Award of Merit.
My motivation to write came from an interest from a studio executive after pitching the story, I needed to do a studio ready re-write for the first time. When I finished the “I Want A Man” re-write I submitted my script in the 2015 Capital Fund Screenplay Competition and WON “Hot 100 List.” After these industry recognitions, I then realized I have a talent to write. That same year I wrote my first novel, “Witness of Love, When Loyalty Kills,” it WON an “Honorable Mention” in the 2016 New York Book Festival which solidified me as an award winning writer & author.
Starting on a blank page is not easy. Where does your creativity come from?
The only answer I have for this question is GOD, he’s blessed me with tremendous creativity and the talent to communicate a story through writing and producing. From thought to tangibility, from vision to manifestation, from dream to reality. Art imitates life but in order to create something you have to live life.
Do you write projects knowing that so many other factors need to happen to get it to screen and does that come into your project creation?
As a producer, yes, however what matters to me the most when I’m in my creative zone is the story I want to tell first and the audience I want to tell the story to. Then the structure of development, pre-production, production, post production & distribution come into play.
What is your dream for this project and what other ancillary revenue do you think it could generate?
For this project, “Broken Pieces,” when 3D Animation is sprinkled with AI, my goal is to evolve my storytelling in this new age of technology. Winning “Hot 100 List,” is the catalyst to green lighting this feature film from script to screen. When I pitched this project at the 2023 AFM, I received multiple replies such as, “I want to see it,” “I don’t think there’s anything like this,” etc. My belief is that “Broken Pieces,” can and will be greater than “Avatar” 1st release. With the right AI Tech Company & distributor I believe this film can be produced eliminating millions in production cost while generating over 50M with a wide release for audiences between 13-30 years old. I’ve done an estimated soft budget analysis of 2M to produce “Broken Pieces,” which includes 1.28% Domestic P & A with gross revenue to budget ratio 325% with estimated ROI of 12%. I also drew and created ALL the Characters, meet the “Broken Pieces.”
How has your experience been with screenwriting contests for this project so far?
So far in the screenwriting competition, the momentum has started with this win. This questionnaire is a great step 2 in the competition process.
If you could stand in a room full of investor partners looking at many projects what would you like them to know about you and this project?
I would like them to know my story enough to invest in my work with a true partnership from storytelling to philanthropy, my passion in storytelling to expose generations of understanding one another. How investing in my work will help millions of others, crossing borders and reaching the goals that I’m passionate about.
