WRITER PROFILE
It’s always great to get together with a large group of writers and investors and keep up to date on what’s new, the screenplay contest, any recent deals, new dealmaker contacts, agents or managers that are looking and simply encouraging everyone to keep going after every dream in this difficult industry. For the hard working writer we want to do as much as we can to continue the exposure and word of mouth in the investment circles of the industry. Another way we do this is with writer interviews that we send far and wide and showcase at all possible meetings and markets.

What motivated you to become a writer?
Alverne Ball: I’ve been a storyteller since I was a young kid, but as a screenwriter it occurred after reading the screenplay, Seven, by Andrew Kevin Walker. I was just beginning my burgeoning career as a crime novelist and I felt that screenplay was a roadmap to writing the kinds of stories I loved watching in theaters.

AB: my creativity comes from the world around me. Whether that be comics, TV, film, prose novels or just walking down the street. Most of my ideas come to me from one word and it usually is a word that i’ve read while walking and then that word turns into a whole universe.
Do you write projects knowing that so many other factors need to happen to get it to screen and does that come into your project creation?

AB: I write not thinking of those factors because first and foremost I must serve the story in whatever capacity it calls for me to write it. I rarely ever think about the other factors until after I’ve written the piece and get an itch to want to see it come to fruition and then I’m like, oh I gotta figure out how to take it to the next level.
What is your dream for this project and what other ancillary revenue do you think it could generate?

AB: I want Beasts of Humanity to create the first openly gay action hero and show audiences that heroes come in all shapes and sizes. I believe this film can and will spotlight the atrocities that are occurring in modern-day Chechnya. I also believe that the film could gross millions because of its potential low budget and high rate of return. Any additional revenue will surely come from the sale of international rights.
How has your experience been with screenwriting contests for this project so far?

AB: My experiences has been very positive as I think readers have found Beasts of Humanity to be refreshing in that the tale feels familiar but also new in that the hero is gay but that universal themes of love and overcoming adversity is an endearing trait that everyone can relate to.
If you could stand in a room full of investor partners looking at many projects what would you like them to know about you and this project?

AB: That Beasts of Humanity could be the first of its kind in regard to the gay action hero and that its limited location makes it easy to shoot and bring to market. As a straight man I was drawn to write this story because of the real world atrocity that is occurring, but I found myself rooting for the protagonist and I wanted to see how, and if, he would win the day. I believe that is something that all viewers want in a film.
