What motivated you to become a writer?
Even though I never thought of myself as a writer, I find joy in crafting stories and sharing them with others. Sharing my writings with others allowed me to realize that they were not only being enjoyed but also inspiring and encouraging those who read them. The satisfaction of writing comes from knowing that someone is there to appreciate it.
Starting on a blank page is not easy- where does your creativity come from?
My creativity is a product of life’s many facets, such as its challenges, joys, and surprises. There are countless untold stories and hidden histories in life. The stories that inspire me the most are those that can provide help, healing, and encouragement.
Do you write projects knowing that so many other factors need to happen to get it to screen and does that come into your project creation?
Though the idea of one’s writing being adapted for film is enticing, I think that writing solely with that goal in mind would lead to disappointment. Writing that gives you a feeling of accomplishment is the best kind, and with the help of someone, you can make your dream a reality on the big screen.
What is your dream for this project and what other ancillary revenue do you think it could generate?
I dream of NeBAS: Never Been A Slave being shared far and wide, spreading its message of hope and resilience. While it was initially created as a feature, this script also has the potential to be transformed into a television series should that be the desired path. I was left with feelings of anger and hatred after watching many stories of slavery. My purpose was to craft a story that truthfully confronted the difficult topic of slavery, while also injecting some moments of humor to lighten the mood. I wrote this with the hope that it would contribute to a nation’s efforts to heal its racial divide.
How has your experience been with screenwriting contests for this project so far?
Despite not winning any contests, I received consistent praise for my script from the critiques. Receiving your email of Congratulations for making it on your Top 100 list was a humbling and uplifting experience, and I am grateful for the recognition. Your email of congratulations for making it on your Top 100 list was truly humbling and uplifting. It has given me the inspiration to keep writing, and I am grateful for the recognition. Thank you!
If you could stand in a room full of investor partners looking at many projects what would you like them to know about you and this project?
It is crucial for the nation’s wounds to start the process of healing now. There is a compelling narrative behind this story that must be shared with the world, and we are the ones who must tell it. Will one story be enough to reconcile a nation that has suffered from 400 years of slavery? We have to start somewhere, and this is a good place to begin.
