Writers Interviews, Screenwriter Sabina Sattar

WRITER PROFILE

It’s always great to get together with a large group of writers and investors and keep up to date on what’s new, the screenplay contest, any recent deals, new dealmaker contacts, agents or managers that are looking and simply encouraging everyone to keep going after every dream in this difficult industry. For the hard working writer we want to do as much as we can to continue the exposure and word of mouth in the investment circles of the industry. Another way we do this is with writer interviews that we send far and wide and showcase at all possible meetings and markets.

We want to encourage your writing spirit, motivate you and again give you the accolades you so deserve.

“Bonus Hit”

What motivated you to become a writer?

I wanted to make lots of money – obviously I jest. I started out as a production designer and after working on several produced projects where the scripts were more WTF than WOW, I decided to have a go and realized I really enjoyed storytelling plus it was fun to be other characters without paying for acting classes.

Starting on a blank page is not easy- where does your creativity come from?

I can get inspired from anywhere, anytime and any subject matter could prove to have some story to tell, you just have to be open to it.

Do you write projects knowing that so many other factors need to happen to get it to screen and does that come into your project creation?

I moved on from production design to line producing, where cost is a major factor to everything you do. As writer, I think you should write the best story you can regardless of any constraints. However, when scripts get on the producing treadmill, then reality can smack you in the face. Ultimately after having written, produced & directed several short films, I realized that storytelling is a fine balance between what you want, what you can do and what you can afford to do.

What is your dream for this project and what other ancillary revenue do you think it could generate? Please include script title in reply.

‘Bonus Hit’ is a high concept humanistic take on religion and our ideas of heaven and hell. It’s a comedy with a strong underlying theme of family so whether you are believer or non-believer, hopefully you can still find something to connect with in the story.

Having directed 3 short films which have collectively screened at over a 100 international film festivals and I have also sold, I’m looking for an executive producer and/or investor to believe in me to take my career to the next level, which is to direct a feature.

Logline for ‘Bonus Hit’:
Louis is an assassin with a problem. He’s dead. He’s also never going to get into Heaven. However, a last chance at redemption is offered. All he has to do is help someone. Unfortunately, that someone happens to be the man who killed him in the first place.

How has your experience been with screenwriting contests for this project so far?

‘Bonus Hit’ reached semi-finals in PAGE and a Honorable Mention in the Screenplay Festival as well some others as a finalist. I’ve not been as prolific a feature writer as I wanted to be but the only other feature I’ve written was a Silver Prize Winner in PAGE and is currently being packaged by a Canadian production company.

If you could stand in a room full of investor partners looking at many projects what would you like them to know about you and this project?

I think my short films, ‘Just The Ticket’, ’SWOOSH!’ and ‘Flowers’ which are still playing some community theatres, did well, reaching inclusive audiences and with ‘Bonus Hit’ I believe I could make a film with commercial appeal to audiences who are looking for something other than lowest common denominator comedy and who still appreciate old fashioned Frank Capra-esque storytelling.

I am a freelance Line Producer based in UK and I am open to working with collaborators who are interested in international co-production opportunities.
