Writers Interviews, Shirley Morgan

WRITER PROFILE

It’s always great to get together with a large group of writers and investors and keep up to date on what’s new, the screenplay contest, any recent deals, new dealmaker contacts, agents or managers that are looking and simply encouraging everyone to keep going after every dream in this difficult industry. For the hard working writer we want to do as much as we can to continue the exposure and word of mouth in the investment circles of the industry. Another way we do this is with writer interviews that we send far and wide and showcase at all possible meetings and markets.

We want to encourage your writing spirit, motivate you and again give you the accolades you so deserve.

My Hero : A Betrayer

Written by Shirley Morgan

What motivated you to become a writer?

I started acting on stage at two years old and then became the mascot for several school sports even before I actually became their student, so dressing up and being a different character each time was fun, but I was always being coached as to exactly what I should say and as little as I was, there were times when I felt that I could express it in my own words in a better way and convey the message smartly, so as I got a little older, I started writing my own lines and then little plays for others to act out resulting in my passion for writing.

Starting on a blank page is not easy – where does your creativity come from?

It’s true that a writer has a very lonely job, but the topic I choose is something that I am very passionate about, then I build on it like for this project, I injected basketball, martial arts, fashion-showing, family drama and some exhilarating activities.  I also visualise every character’s role and play each scene in my mind before writing it.

Do you write projects knowing so many other factors need to happen to get it to screen and does that come into your project creation?

A story may be the brain-child of a writer, but as a writer one must concede that it takes numerous vital factors and talented individuals to make a movie, starting from a producer who needs a good return on investment, so a four-quadrant feature should also have global appeal across the barriers of every race and religion as well.  To keep development budgets low, I can only comment that the scenes set in outside countries are shot by co-producers there, instead of sending personal and equipment incurring flights, hotels, insurance etc. costs.  For further savings, the foreign sales can also be done on a “forward cover basis”  prior to development.

What is your dream for this project and what other ancillary revenue do you think it could generate?  Please include script title in reply.

My dream is that the feature for My Hero : A Betrayer is made and if possible, shown on the big screen, because although it only requires a medium budget, it’s untapped story concept not only makes it a feature to be watched by everyone a few times over, but the social message will also get schools to bus their students to the cinemas and buy the T-Shirts and caps with the movie title on it, so sales of these shirts and caps is a boost.  Also, if the lyrics for the two songs are used by the producer, then it will also generate good sales, as it will definitely catch on and become like national anthems both at schools and at homes alike, as teachers and mothers seek every assistance they can get, to teach their little boys how to co-exist in a equal gender world.

How has your experience been with screenwriting contests for this project so far?

It made it to semi finalist list.  Also got a high for it’s current competitive market value and commercial viability rating.

If you could stand in a room full of investor partners looking at many projects what would you like them to know about you and this project.

I believe in being pro-active and changing this world into a better place to live in and there is no better medium to do it than the movies.  This project will change lives, families, communities, countries and the world, so not only me as the writer, but all of those numerous vital talented individuals will contribute and be credited for a positive change.  Furthermore, globally as humans we have all suffered to some extent due to Covid declaring world war four on all of us, so we now need something to make us feel good and this feature ticks all the blocks to watch something as families, that resonates with everyone to some extent.  To make this feature marketable on a wider scale, I have written two versions of it,  as one is set in LA USA and the other in Brisbane, Australia.
