Writers Interviews, Screenwriter Will Bashor

WRITER PROFILE

It’s always great to get together with a large group of writers and investors and keep up to date on what’s new, the screenplay contest, any recent deals, new dealmaker contacts, agents or managers that are looking and simply encouraging everyone to keep going after every dream in this difficult industry. For the hard working writer we want to do as much as we can to continue the exposure and word of mouth in the investment circles of the industry. Another way we do this is with writer interviews that we send far and wide and showcase at all possible meetings and markets.

We want to encourage your writing spirit, motivate you and again give you the accolades you so deserve.

THE QUEEN’S COIFFEUR

Written by Will Bashor

What motivated you to become a writer?

I remember my summers as a child when I anxiously waited for the mailman to bring my “Weekly Reader.” I don’t even know if it still exists, but it encouraged me to get my first library card and dive into the lives of my childhood heroes like Jesse James, Annie Oakley, and Billy the Kid.

As for writing, I was an avid letter writer to my grandparents and my great-aunt Opal in a small town in Missouri. Later, in high school, I was fortunate to have inspiring English teachers and a spot on the school newspaper. Since then, I’ve discovered how much I enjoy the creative process—especially after scanning the many stories and/or pieces that I’ve collected over the years in a folder on my desktop.

Starting on a blank page is not easy- where does your creativity come from?

I’ve heard that creativity comes from the silence between thoughts, from the subconscious, but I’ve always found it useful to rely upon my fascination with historical personages in their particular time period and settings.

Do you write projects knowing that so many other factors need to happen to get it to screen and does that come into your project creation?

When recreating the past for a period piece, I have to keep in mind the costly and time-consuming efforts to get such stories to the screen. That said, I need to limit the time span and narrow down the story because real-life stories can be terribly messy.

What is your dream for this project and what other ancillary revenue do you think it could generate? Please include the script title in reply.

My dream would be to see The QUEEN’S COIFFEUR, the story of Marie Antoinette’s hairdresser, on the big screen. Adapted from my award-winning book, I believe it could spark new interest in the last queen of France and culminate in a TV series, for which I’ve already written a pilot episode and series bible.

How has your experience been with screenwriting contests for this project so far?

My project was a Top Finalist in the Hollywood Hills International Screenwriting Competition in 2018.

If you could stand in a room full of investor partners looking at many projects what would you like them to know about you and this project?

I would want investors to know that I’ve been able to craft a story in a focused, stylish fashion, ensuring that the piece feels fully ripe for the competitive marketplace. Investors looking for fresh, often-challenging historical stories will find themselves drawn to this project where The Devil Wears Prada comes to Versailles.

Do you have any website links for your writing, credits, background, etc. that you would like to share?

As well as an author page on Amazon, I also have a website and a Facebook page of short stories, “Ten-Minute-Reads.”
